Choose a job, then a troop

Command An Army Tier List: Pick by Role

Choose Command An Army units by frontline, ranged and flanking roles. Compare the dated roster and build a balanced team inside your Star Limit.

Reviewed · Independent fan guide

Choose by role and your current star budget. The available reports do not establish an overall combat ranking. For an early army, inspect Mercenary and Archer; for defense, inspect Shieldman and protected ranged support. Check what a higher-cost choice would displace before equipping it.

How this comparison works

Choose using four questions: what job is missing, where the troop will stand, what its current star cost leaves available, and which existing choice it replaces. The categories below are starting points for inspection. Their order does not measure combat strength.

Community roster and role reports were reviewed on . Costs and availability may change. Our review policy explains the review; use the current game menu when it differs.

Confidence is limited to those dated roster reports. Damage, win rates, upgrade scaling and direct combat comparisons were not measured. Revisit a choice when its displayed cost changes, a new troop arrives, or your own match notes show that its assigned job is no longer covered.

Beginner picks: build a clear front and range

Inspect Mercenary and Archer first. They provide a straightforward melee-and-ranged pair to think about. Decide where the front should be and where you want the Archer to operate. If you cannot describe both positions, settle that plan before adding another candidate.

After a match, name the first job that broke down. Use that observation to decide what to change. The beginner guide connects the army screen with your first objective.

Defending: decide what needs protection

Inspect Shieldman, Spearman and Crossbowman. Their reported roles are defense, polearm and ranged support. Begin with a position you intend to hold, then identify its exposed side. Choose the candidate that gives that gap an explicit job instead of adding another troop without a plan.

Ask whether a failure came from your selection or where you sent it. Review attacking and defending before changing the whole army.

Attacking: choose a route before a flanker

Inspect Scout Rider when your plan calls for cavalry. Sketch the intended route, where it joins the fight, and when you would regroup. If you cannot explain how that move supports the objective, a new unit will not make the decision for you.

Check commands and formations so the order you issue matches the position you want. Change the route or the unit between comparisons, rather than both together.

Four-star melee: inspect the trade before committing

Immortal, Spartan, Samurai and Berserker are the four-star melee references in this roster. Compare them against an actual opening in your plan. Write down what would leave the army to make room and which jobs the remaining choices can cover.

Use the army builder for that comparison with your displayed costs. A plan that fits the budget is ready to inspect in play; the arithmetic does not predict who wins.

Ten-unit role and star reference

These are community-reported costs checked on . The table may omit newer troops. Costs are editable in the army builder so you can use values from your current menu without treating this reference as a live roster.

Build a team, then change one choice

These role-first team examples make the star-budget tradeoffs explicit. They use reported costs and illustrate a plan to inspect, rather than a measured best team. Each has four equipped entries.

  • Beginner roles — 4 stars: Mercenary (1), Shieldman (1), Archer (1), Spearman (1). Give the front, ranged line and approach coverage clear positions.
  • Defend with protected ranged support — 6 stars: Shieldman (1), Spearman (1), Archer (1), Crossbowman (3). Check that the ranged entries have room behind the position you plan to hold.
  • Attack with coherent support — 5 stars: Scout Rider (2), Mercenary (1), Archer (1), Shieldman (1). Choose a cavalry route that still supports the rest of the army and the objective.

Enter the chosen composition in the Army Builder, using your current costs. Its six-star example loads the defensive composition above.

  1. Write the objective and the role you need to improve in one sentence.
  2. List your current choices and copy their displayed costs into the army builder.
  3. Choose one replacement and identify the job it should solve. Keep the other choices stable.
  4. After playing, record whether that job improved and what changed in the situation. A different opponent or route can explain a different result.
  5. Keep, revise or undo the change using that observation. Avoid rebuilding the entire team from one result.

Changed since last check: this is the first review, published September 13, 2026, with ten reported troops. No claimed buff, nerf or tier movement is inferred from the game’s update title.

Questions before you play

What is the best unit in Command An Army?

This reference supports choosing by role, not naming a universal winner. Start with the problem in your last match: an exposed ranged line, an uncovered approach, or an attack without a route. Compare candidates for that job against the star cost shown in your current menu.

Are four-star troops always better than one-star troops?

A larger listed cost does not establish better results for every team. Check what you would remove to make room and whether the remaining army can still do its intended jobs. This page does not contain measured damage, win rates or personal combat-test results.

Why is a newer troop missing from this tier list?

The table is a dated reference to ten reported troops, not a complete promise for every update. Check the current roster in the game. You can enter a custom unit and its displayed cost in the army builder while applying the same role questions.

What if the game shows a different star cost?

Use the value in your current game. The table preserves reported costs from the review date so the comparison has a clear basis. Override the preset cost in the army builder, recalculate your plan and check that you still have room for the roles you need.
